Jose Carlos de la Macorra and Maria Batiz were both born and raised in Mexico City. Maria Restores paintings as well as helping out in the Cafe/Shop the days we are open to public. Jose Carlos studied his Bachelor Degree in Hotel Management and cooking in France and the UK. Cooking and service have been part of Jose Carlos life since childhood and "Felipa" the cook at his parents house for more than 25 years, influenced Jose Carlos in every possible way.Jose Carlos Started working in restaurants a few hours a day after school, just for the pleasure of being around food and people. The second biggest influence was "Camp Pinnacle" , a beautiful summer camp in North Carolina, USA where his father would send Jose Carlos and his brother every year for the summer from the early age of nine to well into their twenties. He became Head Counselor and horse back riding instructor, but Camp was no exemption, Jose Carlos got involved in the dining Hall, he became the manager serving more than 300 hungry campers every day three times a day.Passion for food and service just keeps growing.Maria and Jose Carlos have been living in New Zealand since 2000. Mexican Specialities started that same year at the Saturday market in Parnell, selling Mexican food and gifts, then Jose Carlos did a few years of party catering as well as delivering food to businesses in the Parnell, Newmarket and Remuera areas, and in 2004 he decided to open "Saturdays Only", a space where people could sit, eat and buy Mexican food products and Gifts.
A space dedicated to Mexico with a bit of everything, just like home.
Today Mexican Specialities Ltd Cafe/shop opens Thursday, Friday & Saturday for lunch Only. It is a good opportunity to taste all those Mexican food products that are sold online as well as to touch and feel our unique collection of Mexican Hand Crafts.
