RE:Food History Help! thanks. that's a good idea. i did some poking and I found a sea route called the Matson Line, a pretty fancy ship route. It was the route of the SS Matsonia that travelled from San Francisco and LA to Hawaii to NZ to Australia. I wonder if someone had pizza on board that route and then recreated it for the menu? it wouldn't be unusual for the 50s.

RE:Food History Help! Perrinia I have never heard of the "Matson Pizza" at all. I asked around and no else has either. I know David Burton (although based in Wellington) has written on food history in NZ so you could contact him, probably through Cuisine Magazine where he is a feature writer, all the best and if you find out let us know on this thread!

Food History Help! Fellow Foodies: Does anyone know anything about Matson Style Pizza? What it is or how it differs from, well, regular pizza? It was served in Auckland in the 1950s topped with either cheese, pepperoni, Mushrooms or Oysters.
