Hot on the heels of gold at the World Beverage Competition in Florida, Prenzel’s Lemon Zest limoncello liqueur and Southern Star Vodka both received gold status at the World Spirits Awards announced recently in Austria.

Judges comments for Lemon Zest included a “pure lemon juice fragrance, with an intense taste, a lot of freshness, delicate tartness and a very stimulating full-bodies and lengthy finish.” While the Vodka has a “fresh style with a touch of citrus and mint, a strong body, somewhat edgy and stimulating.”

Prenzel CEO Hugh Steadman is not surprised by these awards and says they are testament to the very hands on nature of the processes involved in making these products. “We source the very best ingredients, combined with our knowledge learnt the hard way from years of distilling similar products. Our expertise is making small runs of extremely good beverages with a kiwi take on them”. He says “Lemon Zest is particularly pleasing as it’s a new product for us, only been on the market for 6 months and already one of our top sellers throughout New Zealand”.
The company’s sales strategy is unconventional, there are no large scale advertising campaigns, instead, sales are based on word-of-mouth in the form of presentations at private households as well as through the network of franchised tasting rooms where the customers are invited to taste before they buy.
Established globally after seven years, the World Spirits Award is highly regarded within the industry, with strict criteria and specialists being trained from scratch by the WSA in order to even be considered to judge at the event.
